Frequently asked questions

Where does the spending data come from?+

USAspending.gov β€” the U.S. government's official record of federal spending. We total obligated dollars by your industry code (NAICS) across recent complete fiscal years. It's public data; we do the aggregation and the plain-English read so you don't have to.

Why does the trend only use older years?+

Federal award reporting lags β€” the current fiscal year and the one before it are still filling in. If we included them, every industry would look like it's falling off a cliff. So we trend only over complete fiscal years, which is the honest picture.

How does knowing the trend help me win?+

Your time is your scarcest resource. Chasing an agency whose budget in your space is shrinking is a slow way to lose; focusing on the ones that are growing means more opportunities, bigger recompetes, and a buyer with money to spend. This tells you where to point.

Is this the same as the contracts I already see?+

No β€” those are individual open opportunities. This is the big picture: the total size and direction of the money in your industry, and which agencies control it. Use it to decide which agencies to build relationships with, then use Buyer Radar and the Buyer Map to act.
